Our Church

Our Mission

We glorify God as a church by making disciples of Jesus Christ.

When Simon Peter and his brother Andrew heard Jesus’ invitation to, “Come, follow me” (Matthew 4:19), there was no mistake about what was being offered. These first-century Jewish men knew exactly what Jesus was suggesting they do. They knew he was inviting them to disrupt every aspect of their lives and to enter into one of the most intimate of relationships in all the first-century world, that of discipleship.

In that first-century world disciples were those that detached themselves from their own way of life and reattached themselves to a rabbi (teacher), committing themselves to his service and to becoming like him in every way that they were able. So complete and total was a disciple’s commitment to the rabbi that it became the preeminent reality of their life and the defining element of their personality, and the nature of what it means to be a disciple has not changed in over 2000 years.

Accepting the invitation to follow Jesus still requires this type of first-century commitment. Jesus is still looking for men and women who will disrupt their entire life, attach themselves to him in an intimate relationship, and learn from him, reflecting his person and carrying out his purposes. In fact, one of the last things that Jesus said to his disciples was go and make more disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), and it is this Great Commission that fuels the activity of the church today.

GEBC’s mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ, both locally and globally, by helping people connect with Jesus in an intimate relationship and teaching them to reflect his character, conduct and concerns in every area of their life. Fulfilling the Great Commission of making disciples is sure to be a labor-intensive task that will take time, require intentional leadership and deep relationships. Toward this end, the elders of GEBC have identified eight essential attributes that Scripture indicates all disciples should possess as followers of Jesus Christ and all our efforts as a community of faith are focused on helping cultivate these attributes in the lives of our congregants.

  • Disciples receive salvation by grace (John 3:16).
  • Disciples live in worship continually (John 4:23-24).
  • Disciples depend on Jesus’ power fully (John 15:5).
  • Disciples connect in fellowship deeply (Acts 2:42-47).
  • Disciples obey Jesus’ teaching wholly (Matthew 7:24).
  • Disciples serve with Jesus passionately (Luke 14:27).
  • Disciples love others selflessly (Matthew 22:36-40).
  • Disciples pursue the lost intentionally (Matthew 28:18-20).

Jesus is the visible “image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15), and nothing brings greater glory to God than our bearing his image and helping others do the same. As a disciple making church, all our efforts are focused on helping cultivate these eight attributes in the lives of our congregants so that we may more fully bear Christ’s image.
