Our Message
We were created to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
Rick Warren’s phenomenally popular book titled The Purpose Driven Life has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, despite the book’s opening declaration. Warren writes in the first paragraph of the book:
It’s not about you. The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness. It’s far greater than your family, your career, or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.
Written in 1647, the Westminster Shorter Catechism declares that the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever! Of course, neither the Westminster Assembly, nor Rick Warren, was the first to identify the truth that we were created by God and for his purposes and glory. The apostle Paul declares this truth writing,
For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were
created by him and for him. Colossians 1:16
God created the universe and everything in it for his glory. All of history is designed to be a living canvas that displays his magnificence and illustrates his beauty and brilliance. Understanding that we were created by him and for him and in order to bring glory to him, frees us from the perilous pursuit of happiness and the burden of being completely fulfilled in this life, and it inspires us to pursue a much higher goal, that of bringing our Creator glory in all that we do (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Of course this begs the obvious question, “How do we bring glory to God in all that we do?” We bring glory to God by reflecting the character, conduct and concerns of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Paul wrote of Jesus, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15). Simply put, we bring glory to God by bearing the image of his Son, by emulating Jesus’ attitudes and actions in every area of our lives.
This is what it means to be a disciple, to learn from Jesus and model our lives after his, and the good news of the gospel is that a anyone committed to following Jesus will find life to the full. Jesus also said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). Jesus also said, “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25). In other words, all of the assurances and benefits offered in the gospel presuppose a life fixed upon bringing God glory by following Jesus Christ, and none of the assurances or benefits make any sense apart from that commitment. God sent Jesus Christ so that we could forever see, savor and show God’s glory, by experiencing his salvation and living in the fullness of his life. If we resist or refuse to bring God glory by following after his Son then we miss out on the “fuller” life that he promised.
